Did you have trouble when selecting sandalwood shaving cream?
If yes, why don’t you check my best sandalwood shaving cream list, below.
Sandalwood is one of the popular scent, you can easily find it in many vendors.
Start with Taylor of Old Bond Street, Art of Shaving, Dr. Harris, Proraso, Castle Forbes, Truefitt and Hill, Geo F Trumper, and Edwin Jagger.
Before we discussed it further, let me ask you one thing, what do you know about sandalwood?
The Versatile Wood: Sandalwood
What is sandalwood?
Quoted from Wikipedia,
Sandalwood is the name of a class of woods from trees in the genus Santalum.
The woods are heavy, yellow, and fine-grained, and unlike many other aromatic woods, they retain their fragrance for decades.
People in the past used this wood as traditional medicine and for religious or spiritual events.
You can find sandalwood in Australia, South and Southeast Asia, and Pacific regions.
Probably, the widely known is Indian sandalwood (Santalum Album) and Australian sandalwood (Santalum Spicatum).
However, due to scarcity and high prices, many people turn to using sandalwood from Southeast Asia.
How to acquire it?
The part of sandalwood, which has been use as fragrance, came from wood and their oil.
Generally, they use steam distillation to get essential oil.
High temperature steam pass through the wood and withdraw oil from cellular structure of sandalwood.
What does sandalwood smell like?
It’s warm, soft, sweet, and fresh with balsamic notes.
But, in shaving cream, they usually mixed sandalwood with other notes, so it’s difficult to distinguish the real scent.
So, each of brands will have their own sandalwood characteristic.
My Best Sandalwood Shaving Cream List
There are three criteria when I choose sandalwood shaving cream.
First it’s the price, second is the performance (both latherability and lubrication), and third is the scent.
Remember, “Your Mileage May Vary!”.
1. The Art of Shaving Shaving Cream, Sandalwood
The Art of Shaving Sandalwood less expensive compare with classic British shave cream (like Truefitt or Trumper).
But, the performance is great, both in latherability and lubrication.
The scent made from sandalwood essential oil. It is very fresh, mild and addictive. The viscosity cream is airy, light, and firm.
Their ingredient formulated with glycerin and coconut acid.
Free from alcohol and paraben, but still use Tetrasodium EDTA.
2. Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl
Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream Bowl is the best seller shave cream in Amazon.
What about the price?
It’s below $20 and you will get 5,3 oz. Not pure sandalwood, it mixed with cedar, lavender, rosemary, jasmine and rose.
A lot of people seem like it, but compare with AOS, it felt like artificial, overpowering, and like old barber soap.
New formula is free paraben. The cream viscosity is very thick.
Taylor Old Bond cream is easy to lather, you only need a little bit cream and water to get a nice lather. Also, it provides good lubrication.
3. Proraso Shaving Cream, Sandalwood
Proraso Shaving Cream Sandalwood is the cheapest.
It’s hard to beat them in term of price. For 5,2 oz, it only cost you around $10.
The sandalwood scent is nice, but it’s not like what I want. The scent of shea butter is equal with sandalwood, so it creates a new scent.
New formulation is free paraben, but still contain Tetrasodium EDTA.
Good latherability, although some people say it need more time when lathering.
The cream viscosity is nearly like soap, it’s thick, hard and uniform.
And The Winner Is?
All three cream (AOS, TOBS, and Proraso) were high performers.
When it comes to lathering, TOBS is the easiest.
The price, Proraso is the cheapest.
However, in terms of scent, AOS is the best.
Personally, I choose Art of Shaving as my best sandalwood cream.
It’s maybe pricey compare with other two, but the sandalwood scent is authentic.
I know some of you, maybe doesn’t agree with my list. The best way to do is try all of them and I bet you will find your winner.
